مدیریت پروژه یک نظام سازمان یافته و مدیریت منابع (بطور مثال منابع انسانی) میباشد به نحوی که پروژه بایک چشم انداز مشخص، کیفیت مشخص، زمان مشخص و قیمت تمام شده مشخص به اتمام برسد. پروژه یک کار موقتی است که فقط یک بار و به منظور ایجاد یک محصول مشخص و یا خدمات مشخص انجام میشود. یک پروژه باعث تغییرات مفید و یا ارزش افزوده میشود. خصوصیت موقتی و یک باره بودن پروژه آن را از فرآیندها و یا اعمالی که دائمی و یا نیمه دائمی هستند و ممکن است بارها و بارها محصول مشابه و یا خدمات مشابهی را تولید میکنند متمایز می سازد. مدیریت این دوسیستم کاملاً متفاوت است و روشهای فنی متفاوتی نیاز دارد. و همین موضوع باعث پیشرفت علم مدیریت پروژه گردیده است.
